A range hood is a kitchen appliance installed above the stove for gathering and removing the cooking fumes, gases, steam, oils, greases, odor and heat. It is also referred to as an extractor hood or electric chimney. For every configuration, there are three main components - capture panel, grease filters, and circulating fan. Based on the working phenomena, there are two varieties of the same, namely, ducted or vented type and ductless type. In case of a ductless type, the accumulated gases are filtered and absorbed by activated charcoals. If you are opting for the ducted type, making an appropriate size hole in the kitchen wall is necessary for directing the duct to the outside. You can complete this task with the help of another person. First, align the appliance over the top of the cook-top, the height of the hood should be 25-30 inches above the cooking surface. Mark the location for the vent work and the electrical cable (if required) by using a pencil. Ensure that there are no obstructions inside the wall within the markings. Place it down and make the holes for the venting and electrical cables according to the pencil markings. You can use a reciprocating saw for the preparation of holes in the walls. After making the duct cut-outs, you can fix the outside vent as per the instructions provided in the kit. In order to fill up the opening between the vent and the walls, you can apply silicone caulking both to the outside and inside of the wall before connecting the electrical wiring. Allow the other person to hold the appliance in place and fasten the screws. Recheck the screws again for tight fixation. Mount the fan and filter according to the guidelines. The next step is fixing the electrical connections. Follow the instructions carefully while connecting the wiring of the fan and lighting of the appliance. Note the color of the wires for the correct connections. Place the electrical cover properly to protect the wiring. Turn on the power supply and check whether the fan and lighting are functioning properly or not.
