There is an interesting fact about the origin of Spanish rice. Though the name of this dish contains the word Spanish in it, due to which one takes it for granted that it originated in Spain, surprisingly, it does not have its roots in that country. This dish is unknown in Spain. Most probably, that is the reason why this dish is now made in so many different styles.
Spanish Rice in a Rice Cooker
Ingredients
- 2 tsp. cumin
- 2 cups long grain rice
- 4 cups water (boiled)
- 2 tomatoes (diced)
- 6 garlic cloves (minced)
- ¼-½ tsp. salt
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 4 tbsp. tomato paste
- 1 small onion (diced)
Method
First, cook the rice in a rice cooker. Once done, let it cool for about 10 minutes. In a saucepan, fry the rice for about 3-5 minutes over medium heat until golden. Add in the onion, salt, garlic, and cumin. Sauté for a minute and then add the tomato paste along with the boiled water to the pan. As soon as the water boils again, turn the heat to low, and cook for another 20 minutes, covered.
Spanish Rice and Beans
Ingredients
For Beans
- 1 tbsp. pepper (chopped)
- 1 tsp. onions (chopped)
- 1 tsp. garlic (chopped)
- 1½ can tomato sauce
- ½ tsp. black pepper
- ½ lb pepperoni
- 1 can pink beans
- 2 cups water
- ½ tsp. salt
For Rice
- 2 qt tap water
- 1 lb rice
- ½ tbsp. salt
Method
Cook the garlic, pepperoni, pepper, and salt in one cup of water in a saucepan for about 10 minutes over medium heat. Once this is done, add in the pink beans along with the tomato sauce with one more cup of water. Let it cook for 15 minutes over medium heat, while stirring frequently. The beans are ready. For the rice, boil the tap water in a cooking pot. Then, add the salt and oil to the pot and let the mixture come to a boil. Add in the rice, stirring occasionally. Cover the pot until the rice turns dry and single grain. Serve hot.
Spanish Rice With Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- ¼ cup onion (chopped)
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1½ cups rice
- 2 tbsp. oil
- 3 garlic cloves (minced)
- 2 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
Method
Heat the oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and onion to the oil, and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until the ingredients are softened. Now add in the rice and cook for about 5 minutes until it turns golden brown. Stir continuously. Add the tomato sauce along with the broth to the rice. Bring the mixture to a boil while stirring. Once it boils, lower the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. Serve hot.
Spanish Rice with Brown Rice
Ingredients
- ½ tsp. garlic powder
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1 red bell pepper (chopped)
- ½ tsp. kosher salt
- 1 cup long grain brown rice
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tsp. chili powder
- 1 cup onion (chopped)
Method
Heat the oil over medium heat in a pan. Add the rice, onion, and bell pepper to it and sauté for about 5 minutes until the rice turns golden brown and the vegetables become tender. Now, add in the chili powder, garlic powder, salt, sauce, and cumin; bring to a boil. When the mixture starts boiling, cover the pan with a lid, and cook for about 45 minutes. Serve hot.
