How to Make a Roman Helmet

The Roman helmet looked grand and imperial with its red plumage. A handmade helmet can make a great addition for a costume party, or a Roman play.

The Roman helmets were different and varied according to ranks. The most prestigious of them all was the imperial helmet which had a distinct red feathered crescent. These helmets can make great projects for kids, and help them utilize their time doing creative art and craft activities. It can also be used for making non-expensive costumes for a school play or for a party. Making a Roman Helmet for Kids Method 1: Using Aluminum Foil You can make any of the ancient Roman weapons, using the method given below. In order to make the helmet, all you need is two shades of aluminum foil, one in silver and the other in gold. The silver foil will make the entire body of the helmet, while the golden foil will make the headband and the cheek guards of the helmet. Let's go over the items you will need: Items Required:
  • 2 cereal cardboard
  • Silver aluminum foil
  • Golden aluminum foil
  • Thermocol to make the red crest
  • Red feathers or craft cloth or paper (Choose any one)
  • Paper or light plastic bowl
  • Scissors
  • Silver and golden duct tape
Procedure:
  • Step 1- Use a bowl which fits your child's head. Remember in case you are using a plastic bowl, make sure it is extremely light. Now you will need to completely cover the bowl with silver foil, while making sure that all surfaces are covered. Use as much foil as you need, because the more foil you use, the stronger the helmet will become.
  • Step 2- Cut the cereal cardboard into trapezium, so that the taper side can be connected to the helmet base. This shape will make the neck guard of the helmet.
  • Step 3- Cover the neck guard with silver foil as well, and thereafter stick the neck guard to the underside of the helmet's base, using silver duct tape.
  • Step 4- Now cut some more of the cardboard, in order to make the headband, which will be placed in front of the helmet. Cut the cardboard into a triangular headband, with its tip, in the center of the helmet. This is to show the imperial attributes of the helmet.
  • Step 5- Cover this band with golden foil and then stick it over the front of the helmet, using golden duct tape.
  • Step 6- Now cut the cardboard into 2 small dagger shaped pieces. These will make the cheek guards of the helmet.
  • Step 7- Cover these pieces with golden foil and then attach them to the helmet using golden duct tape.
  • Step 8- Your helmet is almost ready, except for adding the red crest. For this, use the thermocol and cut it into a small Mohawk shaped piece. Make sure it covers the entire stretch of the helmet, starting from the top of the helmet until the very end. This red crest must be in the center of the helmet, much like how the modern-day Mohawk hairstyles look!
  • Step 9- Cover the thermocol with red paper and thereafter stick it to the helmet.
  • Step 10- Your final step requires that you either stick the red feathers into the thermocol, or use red paper or cloth. Cut either one of these into a long strip with the base intact. This base will be stuck to the sides of the thermocol, while the strips flare out.
Your Roman helmet is ready. You can use a blunt pencil to make designs on the golden parts of the helmet, to give it a more regal look. Method 2: Using Paper-Mache Items Required:
  • Paper-mache
  • Silver paint
  • Golden and silver foil
  • Cereal cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Golden and silver duct tape.
Procedure: This procedure is nearly the same as method 1, barring the making of the hemispherical cap of the helmet. For which you will need to prepare the paper-mache paste. Once the paste is ready, set this paste on a bowl which fits your child's head. Let the mache set in and dry up. It will take about 4 - 5 hours. After it dries up, paint the outer surface using silver paint, so that a thick layer of paint is formed. It should not look like paper after being painted, and instead should look more like metal. Gently remove the plastic bowl or let it remain if it is expendable and light. The rest of the procedure is the same as follows while using the aluminum foil. The above mentioned methods are guaranteed to help you make an attractive and sturdy Roman helmet. There are a few more methods for making a roman helmet, which use only paper, but these do not last too long and may open up or tear during the event. An embarrassing situation, which must not be allowed.
