Easy Scalloped Potatoes

Call it scalloped potatoes, potatoes au gratin, or au gratin potatoes, it is a popular culinary technique in food preparation. Read the Buzzle article to find easy-to-follow recipes, and surprise everyone for dinner tonight.

Either bake or cook scalloped potatoes under a broiler, and you'll get a perfect golden crust on top. Traditionally, the dish is served in the baking dish it's cooked in. Scalloped Potatoes with Ham Ingredients
  • Baked ham, ¼'' slices, 12 oz.
  • Cheddar cheese, grated, 2 cups
  • Milk, 1½ cups
  • Butter, room temperature, 3½ tablespoons
  • Flour, 2 tablespoons
  • Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced, 4
  • Onions, julienne, 2
  • Salt and black pepper, for taste
Directions Preheat the oven at 350ºF, and grease a baking dish with ½ tablespoon of butter. In a pan, melt 1½ tablespoons butter on medium heat; but make sure butter doesn't burn. Add the flour, and cook it for a minute or so. Take the pan off the stove, and add the milk. Keep whisking the ingredients, and when everything is combined properly, bring the pan back on the stove and let it simmer as you stir. Once the mixture turns thick, again remove from the stove, and add salt and black pepper as per your taste. Take another pan to cook the onions in 1½ tablespoons of butter. When the onions are golden brown, season it with salt and black pepper. Pour some of the flour mixture in the baking dish, and then add the sliced potatoes on top. Spread the onions along with slices of ham, and then the cheese. Keep making layers, and in the end, sprinkle some more cheddar cheese on top. Place the dish inside the oven, and bake for about 45 minutes. When the cheese turns golden and begins to bubble, remove the baking dish, and serve hot. Scalloped Potatoes with Cheese Ingredients
  • Provolone cheese, 4 slices
  • Cheddar cheese, grated, 2 cups
  • Butter, room temperature, 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic cloves, thinly sliced, 2
  • Potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced, 1½ lbs.
  • Heavy cream, 1 pint
  • Parmesan cheese, grated, ½ cup
  • Salt and black pepper, for taste
Directions Preheat the oven at 325ºF, and grease a casserole with butter. Place the sliced potatoes in the casserole. In a pan, melt the butter and use a brush to spread it over the potatoes. Place garlic slices over the potato slices, and then pour heavy cream on top. Drizzle one cup Cheddar cheese, and season with salt and black pepper. Again place potatoes in one layer, then the garlic, heavy cream, Cheddar cheese, and then salt and black pepper. Once the layers are done, spread Provolone cheese slices on top ,and again season with salt and black pepper. Place the casserole in the oven, and bake for about 30 to 35 minutes. Remove the casserole, and spread Parmesan cheese on top. Again bake for 30 to 35 minutes till the cheese crust is golden brown on top. Remove the casserole from the oven, and serve it immediately. Scalloped Potatoes with Sausage Ingredients
  • Polish sausage, ¼'' slices, cooked, 1 lb.
  • Butter, 2 tablespoons
  • All-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons
  • Parsley, chopped, 2 tablespoons
  • Milk, 2 cups
  • Onion, chopped, ¼ cup
  • Red potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced, 4
  • Salt and black pepper, for taste
Directions First we need to place sliced sausages in the microwave to heat for about 3 minutes. Keep the microwave bowl uncovered, and drain once the sausage is heated. In a pan, melt butter and then add flour. Keep stirring it till the flour changes color; add salt and black pepper in. Remove the pan off the stove, and add the milk. Keep whisking continuously, and bring the pan back on the stove. Once the sauce becomes thick, again remove the pan off the stove and set aside. Then in the same pan, add potato slices and onions in; add sausage pieces and keep stirring. Cook for a little more time till the potatoes are tender, about 5 to 10 minutes. Once the potatoes are tender, sprinkle chopped parsley and serve.
