- 1½ teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1 Vidalia onion
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup All-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ⅓ teaspoon dried oregano
- ⅛ teaspoon cumin, ground
- ⅛ teaspoon dried thyme
- ¾ cup vegetable oil, for frying
- Salt and black pepper, for taste
- 2 tablespoons creamy horseradish sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ⅓ teaspoon paprika
- ⅓ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ⅛ teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and black pepper, for taste
- First we make the dipping sauce. Take a bowl to mix mayonnaise, horseradish, ketchup, salt, black pepper, paprika, oregano, and cayenne pepper properly. When the sauce is ready, keep it inside the refrigerator till you have to serve.
- Now we will make the batter. Take a bowl to beat the egg and then add milk to it. Take a different bowl to mix salt, black pepper, paprika, oregano, thyme, cumin, cayenne pepper, and flour together.
- Keep both bowls on the side and let's work on cutting the onion. Take 1'' off the top and bottom. Remove the skin and get a sharp knife to cut the onion.
- First make the cut in the middle of the onion but don't cut it all the way through. Leave at least ¼ from the bottom. Turn the onion and make another cut so that you would've made an 'X' on the onion.
- In the same way, stop at least ¼ from the bottom. Now make thinner slices with the knife, cutting the onion into smaller slices. You have to make as many cuts as you can without cutting the onion all the way through.
- Now with your fingers, spread the slices of the onion. Think of them as petals and separate them from the center. When the petals are separated, you will dip the entire onion in the egg-milk mixture you made earlier.
- After that coat the onion in the flour mixture. When you will fry the onion, this will give that fantastic coat to the onion and make it crispy.
- Do this a couple of times more so that there is a good coating on the onion. Keep the onion on a baking rack till you ready the oil for frying.
- Take a deep frying pan and heat the vegetable oil till it reaches about 350°F. Use the cooking thermometer to check the temperature. The oil has to be really hot to get that crispiness on the onion.
- Place the onion in the hot oil, very carefully. Fry the onion, keeping the bottom of the onion at the bottom of the pan. The onion should be submerged completely in order to cook properly.
- When all sides have turned golden brown, remove the bloomed, crispy onion and keep on a few paper towels. After a couple of minutes, open the petals slightly more and place on a platter.
- Get the dipping sauce from the refrigerator and serve the lovely, golden brown blooming onion.
