12 Misconceptions About Atheism

Atheists do not accept any religion as their faith system, or do not believe in the existence of God. However, this thought is not well-received by others, and they're often criticized. This article speaks about some incorrect and baseless preconceived notions that others have about atheists.

"Atheism is more than just the knowledge that gods do not exist, and that religion is either a mistake or a fraud. Atheism is an attitude, a frame of mind that looks at the world objectively, fearlessly, always trying to understand all things as a part of nature." ― Emmett F. Fields
Diverse cultures around the world have their own religious faiths and belief systems. Everyone lives their lives according to the doctrines set by their respective religions. On other hand, there are some who belong to the school of thought that states that God does not exist. They do not believe in any religion, and seek logic and reasoning behind everything. They believe that God is a man-made term, when man could not seek answers for mysterious questions. There were a myriad of questions: how the universe works, how living beings were born on the Earth, how the planetary system runs, etc. They are obviously much lesser in number than the believers. When a child is born in any family, he/she is taught religious duties and beliefs right from childhood. Faiths are deep-rooted in family systems. However, some choose not to follow idol-worship or the existence of 'God'. Sadly, such people have been subject to ridicule, to the extent of calling them evil or worshipers of the devil.
Common Misconceptions About Atheism
#1: Atheists are immoral.
Seriously? Just because someone does not believe in God does not mean he is a sinner or an immoral person who lies, deceives, and has all the negative traits. They can be perfectly as human as others, with the judgment to decide what is right and wrong. Yet, some people have a misconception that atheists are really bad, bad people, who have no morals, and are all set to do the wrong things in the world.
#2: Atheists are arrogant people who think very highly of themselves.
This statement is taken a bit too far, since the believers think that atheists believe themselves to have the supreme power by not believing in God. When they do not worship something, it implies that they worship themselves! This is a crazy notion indeed about atheists. Next, people might also think that atheists believe that they have 'supernatural' powers.
#3: Atheists are highly negative and critical people.
"If you're an atheist, you know, you believe, this is the only life you're going to get. It's a precious life. It's a beautiful life. Its something we should live to the full, to the end of our days. Where if you're religious and you believe in another life somehow, that means you don't live this life to the full because you think you're going to get another one. That's an awfully negative way to live a life. Being an atheist frees you up to live this life properly, happily and fully" ― Richard Dawkins Really? That's what they are blamed of, when they choose not to believe in something. People assume that they're skeptical about anything and everything in life; they do not find life a beautiful blessing bestowed upon them. They do not appreciate things around them. In fact, atheists appreciate science and the beauty of nature very much.
#4: There are no atheists in foxholes.
"People say there are no atheists in foxholes. A lot of people think this is a good argument against atheism. Personally, I think it's a much better argument against foxholes." ― Kurt Vonnegut There are many who believe that, when stuck in a dire or near-death situation, many atheists convert into believers. Well, this is a misconception that is common belief.
#5: Atheism is a completely different religion in itself.
Atheism denies the existence of God, or any other religion. It is not a different 'religion'. It is simply used to describe a school of thought. They do not advocate any other God, nor have they made their own religion. They're simply humans who think rationally.
#6: Atheists worship the devil.
Okay, just because atheists do not believe in the existence of God does not imply that they go and worship the devil. So, if they do not believe in the good created by God, they're really nasty people who believe in the devil? Worse, some people believe that they may have been sent on the earth by the devils to create havoc, and trouble the 'good people' out here.
#7: Atheists have no love for their country.
Just because atheists do not accept the official religion of a country, or any other religion, does not make them less patriotic. They do love their nation and their people as much as any of us.
#8: They're plotting a conspiracy against God.
How can they plot a conspiracy against someone who they believe does not exist at all? Atheism is not about criticizing, it is about expecting rational and logical answers, seeking scientific explanations in various phenomena, instead of merely accepting religious texts.
#9: Atheists are communists.
Okay, so people think that atheists want to inflict torture and want to be totalitarians. They want to suppress the world under their thumb, since they believe no one is, and no one can be better than them. This is a completely wrong notion. Truth is atheists are humans who also want to do good for the society.
#10: Atheists are envious.
Envious of what? Sadly, believers think their negative attitude makes them envious of the believers, hence they choose not to believe in God. Untrue!
#11: Atheists are angry people.
There is a lot of nonsense that people can throw around about atheists. Some think that they possess a lot of anger in their heart, due to which they lack the vision to see good, hence deny the existence of God. This is again something that isn't the case.
#12: Atheists are slaves of science and technology.
Yes, atheists seek scientific explanations, but this does not mean that they succumb to technology and act as slaves. They enjoy a fulfilling life like the believers that can be devoid of science. They don't worship science; they believe in getting logical answers. Of course non-believers still can't be very vocal about all this in many nations, and people often look down upon them. To believe or not to believe is everyone's personal choice. Some of them have been vocal about being an atheist, on the other hand, many have chosen not to be vociferous about it. Being an atheist sometimes can attract many controversies, and it is indeed not easy being one. After all, it is being human that matters the most. To do good deeds is most important. Believer or non-believer, if humanity survives, the whole world will be a more beautiful place. More than the beliefs, it is the good deeds that should matter the most.
