How to Make Gravy

Though canned gravy is easily available, homemade ones are always preferred. Here are some tips for preparing gravy at home.

Traditionally, gravy is prepared as a thick sauce, using the drippings and juices derived while cooking meat and vegetables. Meat-based gravy is very popular and is widely used. Gravy made from roasted turkey drippings is an integral part of Thanksgiving feasts. However, use of gravy is not limited to Thanksgiving only. Different types of gravies are used with a wide range of dishes. Though gravy granules and canned gravy are easily available in the market, you can easily prepare flavorful gravies at home, without much difficulty. Gravy From Drippings Save the drippings and fat from the pan, which is used for cooking meat. Keep it aside for a few minutes, so that the fat comes to the top. Drain the fat into another bowl. Place a pan over medium heat, and pour the required amount of fat. If there is very little fat, you may add the required amount of butter. Add flour, and cook it with the fat. If you have taken two cups of fat, you have to add two cups of flour. In other words, the measurements of both fat and flour should be the same. Stir the mixture continuously, till it turns golden brown. Once done, add the required amount of drippings. Cook the mixture for a few minutes, to make the gravy. If the mixture is too thick to form a gravy, add canned broth till it reaches the desired consistency. Add seasonings like salt and pepper and serve. Gravy for Biscuits Sausage gravy is widely used with biscuits. In order to prepare sausage gravy, you need half to one cup of sausage (fatty ones are the best), one cup milk, and three tablespoons of flour. Cook the sausage in a heavy skillet. Once cooked, remove the sausage, leaving some bits and a few tablespoons of grease on the skillet. Add the flour to the skillet and combine well with the grease. Stir continuously, over medium heat. It will take around five minutes for the flour to turn brown. Add the milk and stir continuously for another three to four minutes, or till the gravy thickens. Add salt and pepper, and serve. You may also add pieces of cooked sausages in the gravy. This is one of the best ways to make gravy for biscuits and mashed potatoes. So, from now on, you can prepare homemade gravy, instead of using the store-bought ones. Try these recipes to prepare tasty and flavorful gravy.
