Hamsters are getting increasingly popular as pets. They are cute little critters that are very easy to raise as pets. These small rodents are excellent as pets, with very few health problems. The main aspects of hamster care are proper housing and diet. You must make sure that the housing is kept clean and tidy. These rodents are found to relieve themselves inside the cage, sometimes in a corner of the housing. This may make it difficult for you to clean the cage that gets smelly with urine and droppings of your pet. What can you do to overcome this problem? How about potty training your hamster? You may ask whether it is possible to potty train a hamster. The answer is that it is possible, if you have young hamsters. Older ones may require persistent efforts. Hamster Potty Training Tips As above mentioned, it is not a difficult to potty train a hamster, unless you have an older member of this rodent. While some may get trained easily, it may take some more efforts to train others. There may be some hamsters that may not get trained at all. However, be optimistic. All you need is a little patience and the required materials. Litter Box and Litter: First of all, you need a litter box that will fit into any of the corners of the hamster cage. You may get regular plastic ones from pet shops. Such litter boxes are available in different sizes and models. You may also start the training with a wide-mouthed glass jar than can be placed in one of the corners of the hamster cage. A one pint jar will be enough for a standard hamster. If you have a dwarf one, opt for a half pint jar. You have to buy litter that is suitable for hamster. While there are various types of commercial hamster litter, you may also use fine sand without any fragrance. Location of Litter Box: If you know the corner, where your hamster relieves himself every time, you can place the litter box there. If the hamster is a new one, wait till it uses a corner for relieving himself. The location for placing the litter box must be as far as possible from the corner in which the hamster sleeps. One third of the litter box must be filled with the litter that has to be replaced with fresh one, on a weekly basis. Preparation: Collect some hamster droppings that have to be placed inside the litter box. It will be better to collect some urine-soaked bedding from the cage and place it inside the litter box. You may also use some tissue that are used for wiping the urine of the hamster, for this purpose. Before placing the litter box inside the cage, you have to clean it thoroughly, so as to remove the smell of the urine as well as the droppings. Make sure to remove each and every piece of the bedding with urine smell. You may also replace the bedding in whole. Once the rodent smells the droppings and urine inside the litter box, it will develop an instinct to relieve himself on the same spot. So, there are high chances that the hamster gets inside and relieve himself. If it fails to do so, you have to repeat the cleaning of the cage and encourage it to use litter box, for answering the nature's call. Hamster potty training is not at all a difficult task and you don't need any expensive materials or fixtures. If the hamster gets trained properly, there will be less chances of the cage getting dirty. This will reduce the smell in the cage and make it easier for you to clean it. One of the most important factors is that a clean cage does not promote bacterial growth, which is found to be a cause for various illnesses in hamsters.
