The petioles or leaf stems are the only part of the plant that are used for cooking. It is the non-toxic malic acid that provides the sharp flavor to it. It is often used as a flavoring agent for pies or desserts. To add to it, this plant is also known for its medicinal properties. The powder extracted from the root of this plant is used as a purgative.
