Coffee Filter Craft Ideas for Kids

Have little ones at home? Here are some tips to nurture their creativity. The following article shall give you some coffee filter craft ideas for kids. Read on and make your little naughty brats stick to one place!

There are many alternative uses for coffee filters. When it comes to preschoolers, all mommies scratch their brains to find ways to keep their little ones busy in some or the other thing. So, now all you mommies can teach your kids to make decorative and creative items from coffee filters. These can be the most inexpensive and easy craft items to make. They will not only keep your kids busy, but will also poke and wiggle the creative bug inside them! Colorful Fish (For Ages 3 and above) You'll need the following things:
  • 2 white coffee filters
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Paints and brushes
Here's how to make a colorful fish:
  1. Flatten out both the coffee filters with your hand. Do this by keeping the coffee filters on a hard surface, say on a table.
  2. Now, paste them on each other using a glue. Make sure it is pasted well and doesn't open from anywhere.
  3. Paint the flattened coffee filter with bright colors and allow it to dry for 20 minutes. You can also use a hand dryer for the purpose.
  4. Once dried, the coffee filter shall become thick. Now, draw a fish on it and cut it along the border.
  5. With the leftovers, you can cut an 'eye' and paste it on the fish. Don't forget to color it black. Well, your colorful fish is ready! You can make some more fish and hang them somewhere.
Beautiful Butterflies (For Ages 3 and above) You'll need the following things:
  • 2 Coffee filters
  • Glitters and paints
  • 'Y' shaped plastic clips
  • Glue
  • Scissors
Here's how you can make these simple but beautiful butterflies:
  1. This can be the simplest of all. Flatten out the coffee filters and cut out small ovals.
  2. You'll need a pair of ovals (as wings) for each butterfly. Now paint each pair with bright colors like red, pink, yellow or purple.
  3. Take a 'Y' shaped clip. Paste an oval on both sides of the clip.
  4. Your butterfly is ready! You can make it look prettier by drawing a border with glitter so that the butterfly glows. Make some more butterflies and fix them on a pin board. I am sure they look awesome!
Wall Hanging (For Ages 4 and above) You'll need the following things:
  • 3 white coffee filters
  • A colored and thick thread
  • Paints and brushes
  • Silver and golden glitters
  • Scissors
  • Glue
Here's how you can make a cute wall hanging out of coffee filters:
  1. Take the coffee filters, flatten them out and draw stars that are big enough to be cut along the border.
  2. Cut at least 10 stars out of those 3 coffee filters and either color them with bright paints or use silver and golden glitters to give them the real 'Starry' look. Make sure you color them from both the sides.
  3. Once your stars are ready, choose one peak and paste one end of a small thread to it. The thread can be 5cm long. Likewise, paste threads on each star.
  4. Now take a long thread and hang it horizontally on the wall. You can tie each of its end to a nail or a holder so that it looks like an arc.
  5. After you are done, tie those stars to the thread leaving small spaces in between. That way, your wall hanging is ready! If you have used glitters, I am sure they will even glow at night!
Pretty Flowers (For Ages 5 and above) You'll need the following things:
  • 1 or more white coffee filters (one for each flower)
  • Paints and brushes
  • Large buttons (preferably yellow or orange)
  • Thin and long wooden sticks (each of about 8-10cm long)
  • Scissors
  • Glue and glue tape
Here's how you can make pretty and colorful flowers:
  1. As stated previously, you'll need one coffee filter for each flower. Flatten it out and draw 5 petals on it leaving some space in between them.
  2. Now cut these petals along the border. Make sure all petals are of the same size and shape.
  3. Paint these petals with the color of your choice and allow them to dry for 15-20 minutes.
  4. After they are dried well, paste the petals on each other in such a way that it looks like a flower. (You'll have to apply glue on one end of each petal and paste them in that shape.)
  5. After you have pasted them, take a button and paste it in the center of the flower. As the button is little heavy, you may not be able to use a glue. So, use a glue tape for the purpose.
  6. Now, your flower is almost ready. You just need to make a stem. For that, take a wooden stick and paste it on the back side of the flower so that the attachment is not seen.
  7. You may either paint the stick green or may even roll a green crape paper around the stick. Cut a shape of a leaf from the coffee filter and color it green. Now paste these leaves on the stick and your coffee filter flower is ready! You can make some more flowers and make a bouquet!
Happiness Cards (For Ages 5 and above) You'll need the following things:
  • 2 coffee filters
  • Ruler and a pencil
  • Paints and brushes
  • Sketch pens
  • Card sheet
  • Glue
Here's how you can make small happiness cards and spread joy all around:
  1. Flatten out the coffee filters on a table. With the help of a ruler and a pencil, draw a perfect square on the coffee filter and cut it along the border.
  2. Now paste both the squares on each other using a glue so that you'll have a thick piece of paper.
  3. Fold it in half so that it opens like a card. Paint the front side with a light background color. You may use sparkles to add a shine to the paper.
  4. Now, take a card sheet and draw a circle on it and cut it. Draw a smiling face on the circle using sketch pens.
  5. We have to paste this circle on the card. But before that, cut a strip of paper from the card sheet. Fold a small portion inwards and then outwards. Repeat the same procedure a couple of times. So, in the end, you'll get a paper spring.
  6. Now paste one end of this spring behind the smiley and then paste the other end on the card. That way, your smiley shall have a spring action! Open the card and write a happiness message and then the card is ready!
