The cat gained in status and strange rules came into existence. One rule stated that if anyone killed a cat, he would be killed too. The other said that if a cat died a natural death, the family had to have their statement confirmed by the priest. People began beating their chest and shaving their eyebrows to display their sadness on the death of a cat.
