Carrying Low in Pregnancy

Do you know what carrying low in pregnancy actually means? Well, there is more to it than the funny myth that encapsulates it. Find out more..

Are you carrying real low in pregnancy? You sure must have come across several old aunties who gaped at your tummy and exclaimed, "Awww...It's a boy!" It's really astonishing to know how people come up with hundreds of ways to determine the sex of babies. If you are pregnant or have children, you must have heard a number of magical ways to determine the sex of your baby. Well, some of these techniques work, while some don't. Needless to say, science does not support any of these old wives' tales! So, before we actually delve deeper into what carrying low in pregnancy actually means, lets explore the funny myth associated with it. It's a Boy...or Perhaps a Girl?? Myth Many people believe that if a woman is carrying low, she is most probably carrying a boy. Alternatively, it means that if you are carrying high in pregnancy, you are carrying a baby girl. There is no evidence as to where and how this myth originated, all we know for sure is, it is definitely not reliable. There may be times when it might prove true for you, but it is equally likely that it may turn out to be a complete hoax. Thus, it is a baseless, weird theory probably meant only to evoke some fun in the otherwise boring life of the pregnant woman! There is absolutely no way of finding, if the boys love lying low or girls prefer a top view! So, the next time when somebody gawks at your tummy and declares that you are going to have a boy, just shrug off and roll your eyes! Fact The shape of your tummy is determined by the position of your fetus. Position of fetus is based on the placement of uterine muscles and pelvic muscles which hold the baby. Thus, if you are carrying high, it means that your baby in positioned in the upper part of the uterus. When you carry low in pregnancy, it means that your baby is placed closer to the pelvis. Women with tighter abdominal and uterine muscles tend to have a higher baby bump, sometimes just below their breast. Older women with comparatively weaker muscles tend to have sagging bump that's pretty low. Also, women with shorter torso tend to have a wider bump, as there is not much room for the uterus to expand. On the other hand, women with longer torso may have a narrow bump. Again, this is only a rule of thumb, after all, it's your baby who decides the location of the bump as per his/her preference! What Does Medical Science Have to Say? Since, carrying low in pregnancy essentially means that your baby is located closer to the pelvis, you need to be extra careful. Proximity to pelvis may lead to premature delivery, early labor or sometimes even miscarriages. Hence, if you are carrying dangerously low, it is important that you do not lift heavy weights or perform any vigorous activities that might push the baby even deeper in the pelvis. Bed rest is recommended for such women to reduce the chances of premature labor or other mishaps. If you execute proper care and caution, your labor might be less painful and of less duration as the baby does not have to travel much of a distance. Thus, this position of a baby could actually prove to be useful for childbirth. The only way of knowing the sex of the child is by performing screenings like ultrasound or amniotic fluid test. Carrying low in pregnancy is certainly not the sign of carrying a boy. Hence, do not believe in this myth; chances are, you might upset your little princess even before she is born!
