Cape Canaveral was known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973. It is separated from Merritt Islands on the east by the Banana river. The construction was finished in 1868 and it stands 139 feet above sea level. Today, the lighthouse is nicely restored and two modern 1000 watt searchlights have replaced the original Fresnel lens. The best way to see the lighthouse is to take a bus tour around the space center. Buses do not stop at the lighthouse, as it is not allowed, however, they drive past it and one can have a look at it and take pictures.
