Experts believe that when these cysts grow inside the kidneys, after a few years they take up all the space in the kidneys. This leads to reduction in the kidney's ability to eliminate the wastes in the body. This is a nocent situation that can turn life-threatening. This accumulated waste becomes very toxic for the body. It acts as a poison and the person may need dialysis or kidney transplantation. Symptoms Headache, fatigue, frequent urination, blood in urine, abdominal pain, pain in the flank or kidney pain are some of the symptoms of bilateral renal cysts. Kidney stones may also cause renal cysts. PKD passes from one generation to the other. More than 90% of the people get this disease from their parents. Other than that, there may be several issues related to the kidneys that may give a person renal cysts in which case it is known as Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease. Diagnosis After taking into account the family medical history, allergies, medications, and the above symptoms, the doctor will be able to diagnose if a person has bilateral kidney cysts. Further medical examinations will be required to determine the seriousness and the complexities of the case. Examinations also reveal how much the kidneys have been damaged, how many cysts have been formed in the kidneys, how many other organs have been affected, what kind of treatments will be best suitable, and any other complications that may have arisen due to the cysts. Ultrasound tests, blood sample tests, and urine sample tests are usually conducted. Apart from these, other tests may be conducted based on the doctor's decision. Treatment After proper diagnoses, comes the treatment. A kidney specialist is the right person to go to for proper treatment. He/she will decide the right course of treatment based on the above-mentioned tests. In some cases, dialysis may be required and in extreme cases, kidney transplantation may become necessary. The specialist may also prescribe medications. These medications need to be taken only according to the prescription. Drinking plenty of water and following a strict diet may be advised.
