Which Computer Should I Buy?

The first time I ever thought of buying a computer for college, it perplexed me to the core. Thanks to the countless brands of PCs available in the market that made my job easier (sense the satire, please!). So, I'll share an excerpt of the conversation I had with a computer professional who helped me in buying the best PC. Here it goes...

Okay, after a lot of thought process, I finally settled on the best computer to buy for myself that is all-inclusive and not a pretty penny at all. I went through different reviews for the best options before buying a desktop PC, but ended up getting even more befuddled! Lord, every website review had countless number of options and all of them were the best, hah! So, to save myself from losing my senses, and ending up making the wrong choice in buying a computer, I went up to a family friend who is an experienced computer engineer, and straightaway banged on. Okay, before I begin, let me tell you that Ted is an IT engineer, and has an acknowledged background in programming, software development, operating systems, and computer designing. The rest of it is as follows: Me: (hopped in all of a sudden) What computer should I buy, Ted? Ted: Howdy! Why do you look so foxed, man? What's the matter with you? Me: Ted, I'm looking for a computer, precisely, and each person I ask tells me about an all new range and brand names of PCs that are potentially the best computer systems to spend money on. I'm highly confused about buying a desktop PC. Please, help me. Ted: Argh! Chill! First of all, you were out asking wrong people about computers. They obviously don't know what to look for when buying a computer as much as I do. Why didn't you come to me in the first place? I would've helped you better! Me: Okay, stop being smug, Mr. Ted! Kindly spill the beans about which computer is right for me. See, I'm laying stress on myself because, considering the gaming freak I am, I'm interested in knowing about gaming computers that offer supreme user-friendliness. Ted: Hmm, that's easy. See, first things first, decide whether you want a gaming PC or a gaming laptop. You can find a number of cheap gaming laptops in the market today. Now I can figure out that you're a desktop person. So, the first suggestion for the best computer for gaming that I'd give you is Cyber Power PC Black Pearl. Oh, trust me, you'll go mad when you'll hear its configuration. This extravaganza is full of names such as Gigabyte and Corsair. You know what they are, don't you? Me: Yeah, they're the biggest manufacturers in their respective fields of power supply and motherboards. But you were saying something about the configuration... Ted: Oh yes! So, this model has 6 GB of Kingston's HyperX DDR3, clocked at bloody 1600 MHz! What's more, this dragon is equipped with a storage of Intel 80GB SSD, and a 2x NVIDIA GTX 480 in SLI. Too technical for you, eh? I'm sorry (smirk!). Me: Excuse me? Do you think I don't know about all this? I would've quickly bought a random computer without even caring about which computer brand is the best, had I not known all these technical terms, okay? So, this one seems good. What are the other options? See, I'm a college student, and I want a trendy personal computer for myself which looks chic and attractive too. There must be a variety of computers for college students, isn't it? So, suggest me, which piece should I buy for college in that case? Ted: Now you're taking it to another direction. You said you want a computer for college, didn't you? Me: Yeah, so? Ted: Silly, why not go for a laptop computer in that case? The first thing that the top-notch laptop brands available in the market today would offer you is portability. Then comes the size. They're pretty small, darling! For college purposes, you can go for Dell Inspiron, Lenovo ThinkPad, or even our very own Apple MacBook Pro with a lot of options in Apple computers. It's much easier, mate! Don't you read the daily updated laptop reviews and ratings soaring high all over the web? Me: Yeah, I know. But you see, I'm really not a laptop person, and I'm not interested in knowing how to buy a new laptop, okay? Why don't you tell me more about what desktop computer should I buy instead? Ted: Forget it, the world is going ga-ga over laptops, and you're out in search for the best computer! Well, you should definitely go for Gateway SX2850-33 Compact Desktop PC in that case. It's the best desktop computer that I know, and is not even over the budget. Erm, I hope your budget is at least $500! Me: Yeah, of course. You wouldn't find an all-inclusive desktop computer below that range, would you? Ted: Exactly my point! So, this will cost you somewhere around $550, but then, this model of Gateway is a slim tower desktop. It has awesome wireless networking, and a terrific Intel Core i3 dual-core CPU that sets apart this model from other conventional SX models. Me: Oh, wow! And what about the hard disk and operating system? Ted: Good 640 GB hard disk, lady! Along with a 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. You better go for this one. There are some other options too, but this one is the fastest PC I've come across. Me: What are the other options? Ted: Well, Origin Genesis with Intel Core i7 920 can be another good pick. It has the fastest gaming, with a Memory of 6 GB. It's motherboard is an Intel X58. However, the price is slightly over budget. Me: How much does it cost? Ted: Forget it. It's way beyond your budget. More than $4000! Me: What the ...! Okay, let's keep this one aside. It's bound to be a good pick! So, what are the other options, within my range? Ted: Yeah, rest you can go for Dell Studio XPS 7100 desktop. It costs as less as $499 with powerful AMD six-core processor, and ATI Radeon HD graphics. However, it has just 1 GB of Memory. But products of Dell are beautiful and attractive, don't you agree considering the fact that you are a college student? Me: Yeah, I do. However, I've always wanted to buy something from Apple. Don't they have a desktop computer which fits my price range? Ted: Ahem! Apple, eh? Well, it's just double your budget. Can you afford it? Me: You see, this is the magic of technology. You can't let money hinder your craving for an amazing gadget or gizmo. Bring it on! (wink!) Ted: Haha! So, Apple iMac is all yours! With its 21 and 27 inches monitors range, it comes with a quad-core Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processor. What's more, it has a phenomenal 256 MB of HD Memory, with good 512 MB of RAM. And this one will blow your mind! Me: What? Ted: The 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo version of Apple iMac has 1Terabyte of Hard Disk! Can you believe it? Me: Whoa! Now that's what I call a desktop computer. I've heard about it, but never really seen it. What does it look like? Ted: Heart-throbbing! I become wordless every time I see it, and when it looks back at you, you can't wait to use it! This is the best pick. Seriously! Me: Yeah, I think so. Wait! One last question, which computer monitor should I buy with any of the above options I go for? Ted: Ah! Well, Apple iMac comes with its own monitor. However, if you really want to pick up a great monitor, go for Dell Ultrasharp 2410. It was nominated in the category of the best PC monitors in the year 2010. Did you know that? Me: No wonder only a computer freak like you would've known that! Ted: He he! So, other than Dell, LG is the safest option for a good LCD monitor. A 23-inch monitor would do it all for you. Rest, there is Samsung, Acer, and Apple again which have some of the best LCD monitors out there. They are all well within the range, costing somewhere between $100-$200. Me: Yeah, this is great! I think I'd either go for Apple iMac or Gateway. Lord, I need to convince Dad to put some more money into my budget, hah! Ted: Not to worry! Desktop computers today can be financed easily. You're a college student, aren't you? Student loans must be a cake-walk for you! Me: Oh, yeah! I didn't even think of it. I'll go through all the above options in depth. Now I know all about which computer should I buy for myself. Thanks a lot, Ted. You're the best! Me: Come on, that's nothing. It rather helped me brush my knowledge about computers. Just remember, while buying a computer, check the warranty quotient, and the graphic card. They are the two most important aspects of buying a good computer. Me: Yeah, I'll definitely take care of that. I'd even tell my friends about this as even they're contemplating on buying one hell of a PC for themselves, but are wandering! Hah! Ted: He he! Yeah, go. Let me know when you've bought it. Invite me to check it out, okay? Me: Sure thing. See ya! Phew! That's about how I got to know what computer is right for me, and what will be a great deal! Yeah, no points for guessing, I did go for an Apple iMac, after a big compromise with my earlier set budget. However, when it comes to technology, you just can't compromise with the quality, can you? So, keep in mind all the tips before buying one. Believe me, while it's too hard to settle on one particular personal computer, using the same for the first time after you've finally bought one is no less than a bliss!
