Clowns made jovial fellows who entertained kids on birthday parties. But one day some ingrate kid threw a bucket of water on the clown and the clown lost his cool as it ruined his make-up. This incident rubbed the whole clown community the wrong way and now they are full of spite for kids and adults, alike. We don't know what but they are real nasties. Nobody is amused with clown appearances anymore. You will not find a gentleman holding his wobbling paunch in hilarity or a certain Uncle Chris banging his glass on the table as an approval of enjoyment when a clown is frisking around. So, how did clowns transition from being genuinely rib-tickling funny dudes to maniacally scary horror entities? Allow us to drag you back in time, as long as 2400 BCE in ancient Egypt. The first ever non-malign specimen of clown surfaced in this period and provided some light moments to the Egyptian royalty. It also sent a roaring laugh in the Greek and Roman societies. One clown of a good repute called Joseph Grimaldi in the 18th century gave the Englishman a good timepass which was other than minding his castle. Grimaldi can be credited to molding the archetypal image we have of clowns today - bizarre make-up, colorful costumes, red-speckled cheeks, (he even donned a mohawk) and unruly absurdity.
However, beneath this seemingly humorous facade lied mounds of tragedies and depression. Grimaldi, despite his popularity as a funny man died as a broke and an alcoholic. Charles Dickens, the famed English writer was entrusted with the task of editing Grimaldi's memoirs. Dickens kind of became fixated with Grimali's grim and dark life and chose to underscore it in the biography more than other aspects of his life. His portrayal of Grimaldi was enmeshed with dark and troubled facets of his life. So, in short we can blame Charles Dickens for implanting a scary image of clowns in our minds.

His worst nightmare turns into a gruesome reality after three loony bin inmates escape from carnival and go around house to house doing their creepy clown catwalk and killing people. We are too freaked out to give any advice.

This 1990 psychological horror was broadcasted as a two-part television movie as the makers must have thought that if they released it in theater only few would be spooked by it, hence they came up with this grand plan of scaring every living person in America. Tim Curry's interpretation of Pennywise the Dancing Clown was the last straw that broke the camel's back - the kids already didn't show any signs of amusement with the clowns around and this movie gave them a reason for life to be terrorized by them. The basic premise is that of a clown whose sadistic mission is that of creeping people out with their worst fears, going into hibernation, and coming back with a bang with more evil plans of torturing people.

There is nothing remotely amusing about Amusement. So our clown antagonist has some apple of discord with adolescent girls as he stalks and attacks them insanely. There are three intertwined stories - mad clown who feels deep animus toward three girls. The plot as a whole, is a bit labyrinthine and perplexing, but even if you can't make heads or tails with the plots, there are enough clown-y chills to scare you out of your wits. There is one particularly frightening scene when Tabitha (second plot protagonist) stumbles on this crazy room larded with clown toys at her aunt's place with one exceptionally over-sized clown sitting on a rocky chair. And there's no guessing for who that can be.

But there is one braveheart or unwisely bold called Mackenzie Carpenter who is willing to risk her life to protect the people she knows from the vengeful Horny. But Ms. Carpenter isn't privy to Horny's invincible powers and just when she thought she burned him down, it was Horny shedding off his clown costume actually (he wore that throughout the movie, you know) and soon resumes his work as a menacing clown mascot.
