Colin Powell has had a prolific career that has spanned 30 years of military service and later civilian service. During his tenure in the army, he rose to the higher posts very quickly and rather than a leader of the combat forces, he was known as a "political General" because of his affiliations with the civilian office since the early stages of his military career. He has served as a aide and a adviser since the time he was a Captain in the army, and this experience helped him serve as a civilian officer with efficiency post-retirement. Mr. Powell was the first African-American to be appointed as the secretary of state, and the first and only African American to be appointed to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has also served as the National Security Advisor and as a commander to the United States Army Forces Command. He is known for his leadership skills and his wide influence on political figures. He is also awarded with the Harry Truman Peace Prize. 2007: Declares that he attempted to persuade George W Bush not to invade Iraq. 2008: His name is mentioned as a possible running mate of Republican Presidential nominee John McCain, but supports Obama in his run for President. 2009: Criticizes Obama administration for not focusing on jobs and economy. 2011: Supports Obama and calls him a "Transformational figure" 2012: Expresses support for making same-sex marriage legal in the country. Also offers support to repeal the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy of the United States Military, where personnel were discharged from duty if they were found to be homosexuals. An elementary school in New Jersey is named after him. 2013: Faced questions on his alleged affair with a romanian diplomat when his hacked AOL email account was made public. He expressed that the contents of the account were very intimate and private to him and appealed for privacy from the public.
