Sweet Potato Pie Recipes

A sweet potato pie can be made at home in a wide variety of ways. This dessert that is an important part of every menu can be baked in a few simple steps within no time.

Everyone loves sweets in one or the other form, be it chocolates, pastries, or pies. One such dessert that can satisfy your sweet carvings is a sweet potato pie. It is a popular side dish in the Southern United States. The ingredients usually used in this pie are sweet potatoes, eggs, milk, sugar, and some spice like cinnamon. However, a lot of variations are seen in its traditional recipes nowadays.
Recipe 1
Ingredients:
  • 9-inch unbaked pastry shell
  • Sweet potatoes (mashed and cooked), 3 cups
  • Butter, ¼ cup
  • Sugar, 1¼ cups
  • Large eggs, 2
  • Evaporated milk, ¼ cup
  • Nutmeg, 1 teaspoon
  • Cinnamon, 1½ teaspoons
Preparation:
  • Mix the sweet potatoes with the butter in a large mixing bowl.
  • To this, add the sugar and eggs. Blend the mixture with a blender on low speed till it turns smooth.
  • Add in the milk and spices and blend again.
  • Pour this mixture into the pastry shell.
  • Bake at 350 °F for 50 minutes.

Ingredients:
  • Pastry lined pie shell, 1
  • Sweet potatoes (peeled and cooked), 2 cups
  • Unsalted butter, ½ cup
  • Light brown sugar, ½ cup
  • Large eggs (beaten slightly), 2
  • Vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon
  • Ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon
  • Ground ginger, 1 teaspoon
  • Ground nutmeg, ½ teaspoon
  • Salt, ¼ teaspoon
  • Orange juice, brandy, or bourbon, 2 tablespoons
  • Dark corn syrup, ½ cup
  • Pecans (halved), 1 cup
Preparation:
  • Take the pie crust and using a fork make a few holes in it. Bake this in a preheated oven at 425 °F for 12 minutes and set it aside.
  • In a bowl, mash the sweet potatoes with a quarter cup of butter. Let them cool and then add the heavy cream, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, spices, and orange juice to the bowl.
  • Mix the other quarter cup of butter with the corn syrup and pecans. Pour this evenly into the pie shell. Add the sweet potato mixture to the pie shell as well, and place it in the oven at the same setting for 25 minutes.
  • Serve the pie with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Mississippi Sweet Potato Pie
Ingredients:
  • Butter (softened), 4 ounces
  • Sweet potatoes (cooked and mashed), 2 cups
  • Granulated sugar, 2 cups
  • Evaporated milk, 1 (5 ounces) can
  • Vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon
  • Eggs (beaten), 3
  • Cinnamon, 1½ teaspoons
  • Unbaked pie shells, 2
Preparation:
  • Mix the butter, mashed sweet potatoes, sugar, and evaporated milk and make sure they blend well.
  • Add the vanilla extract, eggs, and cinnamon to this and mix again.
  • Pour all this into the pie shells.
  • Bake these at 350 °F for 1 hour.
Sweet Potato Pie with Marshmallow Meringue Topping
Ingredients:
  • Graham crackers (crushed), 1½ cups
  • White sugar, ⅓ cup
  • Butter (melted), 5 tablespoons
  • Salt, ½ teaspoon
  • Pie shell, 1
  • Canned sweet potatoes (mashed), 1½ cups
  • Brown sugar, 1 cup
  • Whipping cream, 1 cup
  • Vanilla extract, 1½ teaspoon
  • Large eggs, 3
  • Ground cinnamon, ¾ cup
  • Ground mace, ¼ cup
  • Salt (divided), ¼ teaspoon
  • Miniature marshmallows, 2 cups
  • Milk, 1 tablespoon
  • Egg whites, 2
  • White sugar, ¼ cup
Preparation:
  • Preheat the oven to 325 °F.
  • Mix the crushed graham crackers, white sugar, butter, and half of the salt in a mixing bowl. Spread this mixture at the bottom of the pie shell.
  • Bake in the oven for 5 minutes till the mixture turns golden brown. Remove the pie shell, and let is cool on a rack.
  • Preheat the oven again to 400 °F.
  • For the pie filling, take the mashed sweet potatoes in a mixing bowl. Add the brown sugar, whipping cream, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, mace, and the remaining salt to it, and whisk till the mixture turns smooth.
  • Pour it in the crust.
  • Bake the pie in the preheated oven till it is set for 45-50 minutes. Remove the pie from oven and let it cool.
  • For the marshmallow meringue topping, place the marshmallows with the milk in a pan. Cook on low heat and stir till the marshmallows are melted. Keep doing this till the mixture turns fluffy.
  • Take the egg whites in a different mixing bowl, and beat them till they turn soft and fluffy. Slowly add the white sugar to the bowl and keep beating. Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to the bowl, beat for a few seconds, and then add this mixture to the marshmallow mixture. Spread this final mixture over the pie.
  • Place the pie back in the oven and bake for 5-10 minutes till it turns golden and toasty.
