Sinus Surgery Recovery Tips

The convalescent period after any surgery is a crucial time for every patient. If the surgery is carried out to cure problems related to sinuses, read on the following pointers for a speedy recovery.

Sinusitis is caused due to the inflammation of paranasal sinuses. This inflammation can be caused due to an infection, allergy or any one of the autoimmune problems. The classification of sinus infection is either made by duration or by location. Acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis are the sub-classifications of sinusitis by duration. Chronic sinusitis is the one which lasts longer than three months and can be caused due to different diseases. For chronic or recurring sinusitis, a sinus surgery may be recommended. It is recommended for patients who do not get relief from any prescribed medication. A recent advancement in the treatment of sinusitis is a type of surgery known as functional endoscopic sinus surgery. This procedure involves removal of anatomical and pathological obstructions in order to restore normal clearance of the sinuses. The other type is balloon sinuplasty. Here, a balloon is used to expand the openings of the sinuses in a less invasive manner. It is important to note that any sinus procedure is a delicate procedure, and hence there are guidelines which need to be followed. Pointers for a Speedy Recovery To treat a sinus infection, a procedure for the removal of diseased sinus tissue and creation of a pathway for infected material to drain out from the sinus cavities is conducted. Normally, endoscopic techniques are used for this operation which allows better visualization without using any external incisions. Hence, it is natural that there is swelling, bleeding, and discomfort after the surgery, but the recovery is rather quick. There is re-routing of existing pathways, and therefore post-operative care is equally important. Often, one of the common causes of failure of such operations is poor care during the recovery period. The recovery time is difficult to predict as it depends on the health of the patient and the post-operative care. Often, after the surgical procedure is over, the patient is allowed to go home immediately. Once he returns, the first tip to follow is to lie down on the bed and place his head on an elevation. 2 or 3 pillows will have to be used for the same. Placing the head in this way will ensure that it is at a higher elevation than the heart, and this will minimize edema and swelling. There is also a possibility of swelling on the nose, upper lip, cheeks or even around the eyes. So that the swelling goes away sooner, the patient can make use of ice or chilled vegetable pack on the face, bridge of the nose and eyes as much as he can tolerate. Along with an ice pack, it is also important, that the prescribed medicines are taken on time. Also, the patient should avoid sneezing or blowing the nose for approximately 10 days. Sneezing should be done with an open mouth, in order to avoid putting pressure on the sinuses. Avoid bending, excessive talking and/or laughing, visiting areas with dust or pollen, applying makeup, performing intense workout sessions, and lifting heavy objects. It is important to note that nasal bleeding is normal during recovery period. Consult a doctor while changing the dressing. The patient should eat light and soft food items after the surgery. As far as possible, hot liquids or solids should be avoided till he is completely recovered. There are chances, that he will feel hungry immediately after the operation, but eating right away should be avoided. If there is any sort of unbearable pain, medical help should be sought for immediately. At the same, refrain from resorting to self-medication, as it may have side effects and could hamper the recovery process.
