As per research, sinus cancer affects men 1½ times more than women and develops between the age of 45-85 years. Approximately 60-70% cases are diagnosed as maxillary sinus cancer. In 20-30% cases, the symptoms direct to nasal cavity, 10-15% symptoms occur in ethmoid sinuses, and the rest are associated with the sphenoid and frontal sinuses. Sinus cancer is very difficult to detect in the initial stages. It consists of 4 stages, wherein stage 1 is the initial stage, and stage 4 is the final stage. For those who don't know, this cancer originates from the mucosa. Mucosa is the tissue that forms the lining in certain parts inside your body, including the sinus. A blockage cavity of the sinus, due to a bacterial infection, may also trigger cancer. The cancers associated with sinus include: Maxillary sinusitis cancer, which affects the cheek bones under the eyes; ethmoid sinus cancer, which occurs between the nose and eyes; sphenoid sinus cancer, where the bottom of the skull, below the pituitary gland, is affected; and frontal sinus cancer, which affects the area on the forehead, right above the eyes. Symptoms Be it any type of sinus cancer―maxillary, ethmoid, pyriform (cancer between the airways and food pipe), or sphenoid―the symptoms for all of them are considerably similar in nature.

This cancer may also spread to other body parts and affect organs including lungs, bones, and liver. The doctor will ask a detailed explanation of your symptoms. Many tests including CT scan, biopsy, MRI, PET scan, etc., would be advised for diagnosis. Once diagnosed, the treatment would depend upon the severity. If it's in the initial stage, then cancer can be cured through treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, if it is highly developed, then the chances for cure are relatively low. It is not known as to what causes this condition.
