Science Project Ideas for Kids

Practical Knowledge is always well remembered and makes grasping easy for little children. This article suggests some scientific projects for children, to make learning more fun and easy for them.

Science is often considered as a difficult subject to understand. Only reading and writing is not always a good option, that works for scoring good marks. To have a better comprehension of the subject, is more important than to just read it. A child is likely to comprehend the subject, if certain parts of the chapter is displayed through experiments and projects. Visual representation of the subject can help the child remember the chapters and also use them for future references. These ideas could include different experiments and research on various topics, which helps in enriching their knowledge in that particular subject. Occupying the children with experiments and different projects, will also train them to learn different techniques of doing the research for the given project. It can even boost the thinking and imagination. Here are a few easy elementary science projects for children, that would clear his/her basic concepts. Dissolving Sugar Materials
  • Sugar cubes
  • Cold and hot water
  • 2 glasses
  • Spoon
Instructions
  • Pour cold water in one glass and hot water in other.
  • Immediately put sugar cubes in each glasses.
  • Take the spoon and stir the water in both the glasses.
Observation Sugar cubes in hot water quickly settle at the bottom of the glass and begin to dissolve. Dissolving is quicker in hot water, because the molecules move faster and away from each other. This allows the sugar to quickly blend in the water. However, the case in cold water is opposite. Molecules are closer to each other and move very slowly. This hinders the movement of the sugar cubes and therefore they take time to dissolve. Volcano Eruption Materials
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Big Shallow Container
  • Tissues or cloth
Instructions
  • Pour the baking soda in the container.
  • Pour the vinegar on the baking soda.
Observation Baking soda includes sodium carbonate and vinegar has acetic acid. Hence, when baking soda and vinegar are mixed it forms carbonic acid, which comes out in the form of water and carbon dioxide. The reaction is too strong and almost resembles a volcano and hence is a better way to show children how a volcano looks and erupts. Parachute Materials
  • Plastic bag
  • Scissors
  • String or a thick thread
  • A small toy
Instructions
  • Cut a Big square from the plastic bag.
  • Blunt the corners of the square by cutting a little portion by the scissors.
  • Make a small hole near all the four edges of the square.
  • Cut the threads into same length and tie at least 8 pieces to each of the holes.
  • Take the toy and tie it to the other end of the threads. Secure it firmly.
  • Make sure that the plastic bag is not torn from anywhere.
  • Once the parachute is ready, release it from a height.
  • When you release the parachute, make sure that it descends slowly.
Observation As the parachute descends to the ground, the plastic bag opens and spreads. The weight that is tied to the strings pulls the parachute down and bags surface area resists the air to slowly glide in the air. Rainbow Materials
  • White paper
  • Glass
  • Water
  • Light
Instructions
  • Pour the water in the glass.
  • Take the materials to a place with enough sunlight or use a torch.
  • Keep the glass of water in white paper and watch as the sun's rays pass through the glass.
  • As the light passes through the glass it bends and forms a combination of colors on the white paper.
  • These combination of colors is a rainbow.
Observation Rainbows are formed in the presence of light. The sunlight passes through the rain drops and bends to form colors. Magical Ink Materials
  • Water
  • Lemon
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • White paper
  • Cotton bud
  • Light
Instructions
  • Squeeze the lemon into the bowl.
  • Pour some drops of water into lemon juice.
  • Mix well with the spoon.
  • Take the white paper, dip the cotton bud into the mixture and write on the paper.
  • Let the mixture of lemon and water completely dry.
  • Put the paper into light and see your message appear on it.
Observation When the paper is put in light, the lemon juice receives heat. This heat turns the lemon extract into brown color. When lemon is diluted in water, the message written on the paper does not appear until the paper is heated. These projects could teach little children to create some interesting things and also make learning fun. These ideas will remove all the confusion and clear their concepts. These fun projects can also be conducted in schools as well as in house. However, involvement of teachers and parents can prove to be a great guidance for children and help them to quickly perform these experiments.
