Pimples on Legs

Pimples on the legs and buttocks can be due to a number of skin disorders, the most common being acne, hives, and folliculitis.

Pimples appearing on both the legs is a common complaint among people with a sensitive skin. Leg pimples is generally not a big issue and many people tend to neglect it. However, in case this skin condition is recurring and causing severe irritation, appropriate treatment has to taken. Causes Excessive sweating and use of harsh bath soaps are some of the most common causes of leg pimples. Other causes are discussed below: Follicultis This is a skin condition in which the hair follicles are infected with bacteria. An integral component of the skin, the hair follicles are tiny sacs from where the hair grow. The bacterial infection causes inflammation of the hair follicles. This skin infection is commonly accompanied by formation of painful white-headed pimples. This type of infection can occur anywhere on the body including the legs. The infection of hair follicles may occur as a result of contact with irritants (chemicals) or shaving. Wearing tight clothes or injury to the epidermis such as a wound or a scratch can also cause follicultis. When hair follicles get blocked due to skin conditions like acne or dermatitis, it can lead to follicultis. Hives Hives generally appear in the form of pale red bumps and cause an unusual burning sensation on the skin. Although hives usually affect the face, they can also occur on the legs. An allergic reaction, excessive exposure to the sun or an insect bite are some of the most common causes behind outbreak of hives. Acne Leg acne is relatively uncommon as compared to facial acne. Acne is a skin disorder that leads to formation of whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. Acne is often the result of malfunctioning of sebaceous glands that produce excessive sebum (oil). The sebaceous glands lie underneath the skin and are connected to the hair follicle (root of hair). Although sebum lubricates the skin and prevent it from drying, excess sebum production blocks these hair follicles and skin pores. This encourages a bacterial formation in the blocked pores and eventually the infection is visible as pimples on the skin. Shaving Pimples after shaving! Well, this is a common complaint among people who shave their legs. Although, shaving seems to be the right solution to remove unwanted hair on the legs, this habit may give rise to some serious red bumps. Generally the pimples appear immediately or within a few hours after shaving. In most cases, pimples after shaving are not a cause for concern as they do not contain any pus and go away without any treatment. However, using a rusty blade can also cause a skin infection and lead to outbreak of these lesions. Waxing Waxing is a popular hair removal method and one can quickly remove large amount of hair from any part of the body, including the legs. However, many complain about large red bumps on the skin after waxing. This may occur due to a number of reasons, the most common being usage of poor quality wax. In some cases, application of wax to the sensitive skin can cause irritation and lead to pimples. However, waxing-induced pimples disappear within a couple of days, without any treatment. Hormonal Imbalance Hormonal fluctuations are common during pregnancy, which often trigger pimples on the legs. The body secretes a number of hormones in excess amounts during pregnancy, resulting in hormonal imbalance. Pimples resulting due to alterations in hormone levels appear in clusters and make the skin itchy. What has caused the outbreak of pimples has to be found out correctly, in order to resolve this issue. For acne, there are a number of skin care products, designed specifically to unblock the skin pores. On the other hand, persistent follicultis is generally treated with prescription antibiotics. Temporarily discontinuing shaving and staying away from skin irritants can also help to get rid of pimples. Disclaimer: The information provided in this article is solely for educating the reader.
