Moving Out of State Checklist
Moving to another state requires thorough planning. The following section gives a checklist which you can prepare to make this job easier.
- First, make a binder to organize all your details and work schedule.
- Make a list of all the arrangements that need to be made, along with a budget and individual costs like food, truck, gas, hotels, and others. Make the necessary travel arrangements such as plane, train, or bus tickets, as there can be procrastination by the travel companies as well.
- If you are hiring movers, find out how much they charge. If not, you can hire yourself a truck and drive down. If you own a vehicle, service it and get it ready for the journey.
- Make sure you have made all the arrangements of staying in the new home, like water supply, electricity, and pest control.
- Gather your moving materials like boxes, newspapers, and packing tape, and empty the shelves. Get rid of unwanted baggage and furniture which you don't want to carry.
- Pay off all the service providers like Internet, water, electricity, credit card providers, TV license, building association, and any others. Cancel subscriptions, notify your credit card and insurance companies about the address change, transfer your bank accounts, cancel any memberships you wish to, and get a full medical checkup done.
- Contact your friends and family members and let them know about your moving details.
- If you are sending out furniture, cargo it before the actual moving day. Pack all your important things and empty your garage, lockers, safes, and other storage.
- If you are moving with a child, make the necessary arrangements for clothes, food, and travel. You can do the same if you are moving with a pet. Don't forget to pack medical supplies for the journey.
- Make arrangements to move your conveyances like cars, trucks, bicycles, and any others to the new home, and book parking spaces there. Contact your movers and confirm the moving dates to avoid confusion.
- Finish packing your major supplies and disassemble the electronic goods like computers and television sets, empty your fridge, and discard any perishable items.
- The last week before you actually leave, go through the checklist you made 2 months ago. Cancel all the things you have taken care of. If anything has been left out, you still have a week to take care of it.
- Pack your boxes and label them. Check your travel arrangements for any changes, and also the essentials from the packing list for traveling.
- Provide your leaving details and phone numbers to all your family members and friends.
- Check the plugs of your house and disconnect the electricity. If you have gas arrangements, ensure that they are switched off.
- Make sure you have emptied the whole house and packed everything you need. Dispose the garbage and throw away old water. Last minute cleaning of the house, bathrooms, as well as sinks is important. Check the plumbing system.
- Make sure you are carrying your essential documents, papers, licenses, passport, tickets, money, and other important identifications.
- Lock your home and surrender the key if required.
