Movies that Make You Cry

At times, all that can make you feel better is watching a movie or two that gives you the opportunity to cry; really, really cry. In this Buzzle article, we will give you a short and sweet list of movies that make you cry, even if you're not someone who gets emotional too easily.

The search for tearjerker movies is something which we couldn't come to terms with. Somehow, call us odd, we don't like mushy tear-inducing movies. Why would we want to spend 2 hours in a movie theater or in front of the TV, and find basically, cry? But then there are people who can't help but shed a tear or two at the artistry and the situational beauty of a film. Movies don't make you cry, situations make you cry. Why? Perhaps you identify with them or perhaps they are simple, seemingly day-to-day situations which are portrayed in such a real way that you find yourself flooded with emotions. Other genres may do it for others, but romantic movies really do it for me. We guess it's a matter of personal choice there. And since it is about personal choice, here's my choicest list of the sad movies that make you cry, because, well, they made us cry! Best Tearjerkers Titanic (1997) The ultimate tearjerker as far as we're concerned! The title track, 'My Heart Will Go On' by Celine Dion still haunts our souls. Titanic is a simple story about two lovers, Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet), who meet onboard the historic ship 'Titanic'. They fall in love even as Rose is set to be engaged to Cal. And just as they fall in love, the Titanic hits an iceberg which pretty much wrecks it. Rose survives but only to watch the love of her life freeze to death. The scene where Jack tells Rose to move on with her life is as emotional and romantic as a scene can get! P.S. I Love You (2007) Not exactly a sad movie per se, but certainly the situation is one which will certainly make you a tad emotional. The movie is based on the book of the same name by Cecilia Ahern. P.S. I Love You stars Gerard Butler as Gerry Kennedy and Hillary Swank as Holly Kennedy. Gerry dies of brain tumor but leaves behind some letters for his wife, who goes into depression following his death, to give her the much-needed encouragement to move on. Like we mentioned earlier, not exactly sad, but the underlying message and Gerry's desire to see her move on is quite moving. A Walk to Remember (2002) Call us crazy, but 'A Walk to Remember' is surely one movie that ought to make most people cry. Not too many Jamies (Mandy Moore) exist who can thoroughly transform the wasted Landons (Shane West) of this world to such an extent. Landon, a rogue student is forced to befriend Jamie who, the school think will be able to bring a positive change in the former. Landon initially tries to get rid of her, but as the movie moves along, finds himself attracted to this Jamie who is practically the opposite of Landon. He falls in love with her and goes on a mission to try to be good enough for her, and it is here that we find that Jamie has terminal leukemia and will not survive for too long. Landon then takes it on himself and ensures that Jamie enjoys her last days as much as she can. A beautifully simple movie, accented by the great tracks from Switchfoot like 'I Dare You To Move' and 'You'. Other honorable mentions would include
  • Forrest Gump (1994)
  • Moulin Rouge! (2001)
  • I Am Sam (2001)
  • Old Yeller (1957)
  • Click (2006)
  • Stepmom (1998)
  • Amadeus (1984)
  • Good Will Hunting (1997)
  • Dead Poet's Society (1989)
  • Schindler's List (1993)
  • Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
  • The Notebook (2004)
  • Saving Private Ryan (1998)
  • Braveheart (1995)
  • Marley & Me (2008)
So, if you want to cry your eyes out and are looking for a real tearjerker, go on, try these!
