How to Make White Sauce

Also known as Béchamel sauce, this basic white sauce is the starting point for other classic sauces. Learn how to make this sauce with only a few, simple ingredients.

Traditionally, the white sauce is made with a roux of hot milk, flour, and butter. The thickness of the sauce can be adjusted by altering the proportion of milk or flour. White Sauce for Pasta Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cube chicken bouillon, crumbled
  • 1½ cups boiling water
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • Ground white pepper, to taste
Method
  • In a thick bottom pan, melt butter and margarine over medium-low heat.
  • Add chicken bouillon and flour, and keep whisking continuously.
  • After about 5 minutes, the flour will have turned slightly brown.
  • Now, add water to prepare the roux.
  • As you stir, add milk and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes till the sauce thickens.
  • Before serving, add ground white pepper.
White Sauce for Pizza Ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and white pepper, as per taste
Method
  • In a pan, melt butter over medium-low heat so that you do not burn itr.
  • After the butter melts, add flour and salt, and stir continuously so it doesn't stick to the pan.
  • Once the flour is cooked, add milk to the mixture to prepare the roux.
  • As you continue to stir, the sauce will thicken.
  • If the sauce has not reached the desired consistency, continue to stir.
  • Remove the sauce from heat and spread it on your pizza.
