How to Make Furniture Polish

With a few essential ingredients you can make a furniture polish in the comforts of your home. Follow the methods given in this article to get a cost-effective wood polish.

The best aspect of installing wood furnishing is that it lends the home a warm and classic look. However, continuous exposure to dirt, grime and the elements of nature strip it off its natural shine making it drab and dull. Proper maintenance is an essential factor to ensure the furniture lasts a long time. This involves regularly cleaning and polishing the surface to maintain the shine. While it is not always economical to invest in a commercially available polish, you can always resort to homemade polish to keep the wooden surface brand new. Besides, you could develop skin irritations and rashes due to the petroleum distillates and other harmful chemicals present in the marketed varieties of polish. Instead, you can use naturally available material to make a wood polish at home. Using Vinegar Ingredients:
  • White Vinegar
  • Lemon Juice
Method:
  • In a spray bottle, combine equal parts of the two ingredients.
  • Use a clean cloth to rub in the polish.
  • Buff with a dry cloth.
Using Olive Oil Ingredients:
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup lemon Juice
Method:
  • Combine the ingredients in a porcelain bowl.
  • Use a clean cloth to rub a small amount of the polish into the surface.
  • Use a dry cloth to buff the polish.
Using Black Tea Ingredients:
  • 3-4 black tea bags
  • 1 cup boiling water
Method:
  • Steep the tea bags in the boiling water.
  • Once cool, use a cloth to rub the polish in.
  • Buff with a dry cloth.
Using Beeswax Ingredients:
  • 2 cups Beeswax
  • 3 cups olive oil
  • 10 drops essential oil
Method:
  • Heat about half cup of water in a saucepan but do not boil it.
  • Place the beeswax and olive oil in bowl into the double broiler.
  • Allow the beeswax to melt and stir well.
  • Add the essential oil and mix well
  • Pour into container and allow to cool.
  • Use this to polish wood with a soft piece of cloth.
  • Wipe off excess with a dry cloth
While rubbing, make sure you move the cloth in the direction of the wood grain. To apply the polish to the corners and other such areas which are not easily accessible, you can use a soft bristled toothbrush dipped into the liquid. Regular application of these natural ingredients will provide the wooden furniture with adequate nourishment which is essential to keep its inherent lustrous properties intact. They also help to preserve the surface for many years and thus increase its lifespan.
