How to Freeze Potato Salad

Are you wondering if you can freeze potato salad and if it is safe to do so? Look no further, for here we tell you how to freeze potato salad.

Tip
Before consuming frozen potato salad, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator.
Can you freeze potato salad? The answer is simple; yes, you can. Potato salad can be frozen, but it may not retain its consistency once thawed. While freezing the potato salad is easy, thawing it needs special care, as it can easily get soggy and mushy. If your salad has an oil or a vinegar base, the oil might look cloudy. But it will clear once it is stirred in thoroughly and when the salad is brought down to a normal temperature. However, if it has ingredients such as eggs, tartar sauce, and mayonnaise, there are chances of bacterial growth in the salad, if it is kept at room temperature. You will also observe that the mayonnaise base will separate from the salad as the temperature rises. Therefore, special precautions need to be taken while thawing.
Methods to Freeze Potato Salad
Airtight Container
Step 1 Scoop out the potato salad into an airtight freezer-safe container. Leave an inch and a half space on top, in the container. By doing so, you are leaving some space for the salad to expand. Step 2 Seal the container shut. Step 3 Label the container. You could put a date (day of keeping it for freezing), to remind you of how long the salad has been in the freezer. Step 4 Place the container inside the freezer.
Freezer-safe Bag
Step 1 Scoop the leftover potato salad in a freezer-safe bag. Step 2 Lightly remove excess air from the bag and seal it shut. Step 3 Set it in the freezer for freezing.
Thawing
Step 1 Remove the container/bag from the freezer. Step 2 Set the refrigerator temperature to 40º F. Step 3 Place the potato salad container/bag in the refrigerator. And remember never to thaw it over the counter or at room temperature or heat it in the microwave oven, as doing so may lead to rapid bacterial growth. You can do the same with any store-bought and/or opened or unopened potato salad. The key point to remember is that if your salad has a mayonnaise base, it will separate from the salad. Also, it should not be allowed to stay at room temperature for long. The frozen potato salad should be consumed within four hours of thawing. You can always spruce up old potato salad with some fresh dressing or freshly cut herbs. You can mix in some freshly boiled potatoes (mashed) to improve its texture.
