Golf Swing Tips

It's an understatement that the swing is the most important part of a golfer's game. Here are some tips that will help improve the same.

Incorporating a correct technique while swinging the club is important in the game of golf. One has to maintain proper body posture too in the process. Here is how you should go about this. The Grip
  • In the overlapping grip, the little finger of the right hand overlaps the index finger of the left hand. It is one of the most commonly used grips by male golfers. One should have strong wrists in order to swing the club with this grip.
  • The baseball grip is similar to the overlapping grip; however, the index (left hand) and little fingers (right hand) do not overlap. Beginners generally resort to using this grip.
  • In the interlocking grip, the interlocking of the index finger (left hand) and the little finger (right hand) takes place.
The Swing
  • Taking a proper stance is very important in order to make a good swing. One should see that the body is positioned in a line parallel with the one which connects the flag and tee.
  • The club should be held with the left hand in a manner that the shaft fits under the palm heel. The shaft should lie across the top of the forefinger. Fitting the club under the palm heel is necessary for maintaining stability.
  • The right hand should not be gripped tightly, and needs to be placed on the club in such a manner that it is folded over the left thumb.
  • To attain the correct stance, one should maintain a distance of shoulder-width between the feet.
  • The hips, knees, and feet should be in a line parallel to the flag.
  • Positioning of the feet in a proper way is necessary to get a decent swing. The right foot should be placed in a direction perpendicular to the line of flight, while the left foot needs to be opened up slightly.
  • The upper body should lean forward a bit with the arms hanging freely. It helps in swinging the club quite easily. The entire body weight should be rested on the balls of the feet.
  • Shoulder positions need to be such that the left one is slightly higher than that of the right.
  • One should perform a waggle before actually swinging the club. It helps in checking whether the body is balanced correctly. The torso and shoulders should remain steady while doing a waggle.
  • While initiating the back swing, one should first rotate the body before performing any kind of hand movement.
  • The movement of the shoulders, hips, hands, and arms takes place in the backswing; the shoulders need to be rotated in such a manner that they face the target. The body weight is rested on the inside of the right foot. Weight shifts from the right foot to the left foot during the downswing; the hips and body are rotated, and other body parts (shoulders, arms, and hands) come into action while the ball is being hit.
  • In the follow-through motion, the shoulders and hips are turned, and they face the target. The swing should be in an unbroken motion.
Tips for Beginners
  • Rhythm is an important factor in the success achieved by a particular swing. One should take a brief pause after the backswing, so as to get into rhythm.
  • One might get confused about how to swing in the breeze. The proper technique is not to hit ball harder, but lower than usual. Using a longer club also helps in swinging the ball when there is a breeze.
  • Maintaining the balance of the feet is very important. On can practice swinging the ball by keeping the feet close together.
  • Keeping the right knee in a firm position is also important to consider.
The game of golf involves the use of techniques which appear to be easy. However, it takes time, practice, and patience to master them.
