Eye Twitching and Headaches

Eye twitching is a normal response of the body to stress and so are headaches. However, in some people, these two conditions may have causes way more severe than just stress. Know about these two symptoms in greater detail from what follows.

Eye twitching is defined as the incessant and involuntary blinking of the eye of an individual. When accompanied by a headache, it can put life out of gear. Following may be the possible causes of eye twitching and headaches. Causes Stress: The symptoms you are experiencing could be a result of mental or physical stress. If you feel sapped of energy and get tired easily, then stress and fatigue might be the culprits for causing eye twitching along with headaches. Insomnia: If a person suffers from insomnia, he/she will be unable to sleep. Lack of sleep may lead to eye twitching and headaches in insomniacs. Eyesight Problems: A deterioration in the ability of a person's eyes to focus on an object may be a probable cause. In such a case, it is advisable to visit an ophthalmologist and get your eyes tested. Eye Strain: Eye twitching could be a result of fatigued eye muscles and eye spasms caused due to excessive usage of computers or watching TV. If the lighting of the room in which you read or work is inadequate, it could lead to eye strain, thereby causing eye twitching and headaches. Caffeine, Alcohol and Smoking: Drinking excessive tea, coffee or alcohol often results in this condition. A sudden withdrawal from consumption of these beverages may cause the same symptoms, in a person habituated to them. Basilar Migraine: This is a very rare kind of migraine. Its symptoms include eye twitching, a severe bilateral headache experienced at the back of the head, visual aura, temporary partial vision loss, vertigo and nausea. If eye twitching and headache is accompanied by the above mentioned symptoms, basilar migraine might be the cause. Medication Side Effect: It could be a possible side effect of a medicine which you are currently taking. For example, the medicine for Parkinson's disease causes these side effects. Vitamin/Mineral Deficiency: Eye Muscle twitching may be a result of vitamin deficiency of vitamin B12 or deficiency of minerals like potassium and calcium. Cluster Headache: Cluster headache is the excruciating pain experienced on one side of the head. The peculiarity of this kind of pain is that it is cyclic in nature, with regular intervals between two occurrences. Cluster headache might fluctuate from the right side to the left side of the head, but it is always unilateral. For example, if the attack is on the right side, it may cause right eye twitching and headaches concentrated to the right side only. Neurological Problem: It can be a result of a neurological problem, especially if it is severe enough to hamper your normal life. A neurological problem will have associated symptoms like visual loss, twitching of the face, nausea, dizziness, vomiting etc. Prevention Take adequate rest. Sleep for at least 7-8 hours every night. To alleviate mental stress, do meditation or yoga. Exercise on a daily basis religiously. Eat healthy, nutritious food which fulfills your daily requirement of vitamins and minerals. Take proper breaks while watching TV or working on a computer. Acupuncture accompanied by Chinese herbal medicines is well-known for treating migraines and headaches effectively, without any side effects. To rule out any neurological disorder, consult a neurosurgeon. A neurologist will perform tests like MRI/CT scan/EMG test, examine your symptoms, check your medical history and then provide a proper solution. It may be possible that the headache and eye twitching you are experiencing are totally unrelated. In such a scenario they should be treated separately. Eye twitching and headaches are more or less harmless and go away on their own within a few days. However, if they continue for more than a week and are accompanied by other symptoms, it is recommended that you contact a health care professional. After all, health is something we should not take lightly. In Thomas Carlyle words, "He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything".
