Crafts for Preschoolers

Kids are like wet clay, easy to mold and absorbing whatever you teach them very quickly. Apart from making them read books and listening to music, making them practice crafts is also a fruitful activity which develops their hand at creativity. For starters, this article lists down a few crafts for preschoolers which are easy to understand and make.

Preschoolers need to be kept busy all the time. If they are not kept engaged, rest assured that havoc is on its way. It is an extremely challenging task to find ways to keep them busy so that they stay put in one place. This becomes a must, especially when you are busy planning for some function or are busy in your household work. Craft activities are one way to keep them engaged and at the same time, improve their skills and let them have fun. It also helps them build a positive self-image, improves hand-eye coordination, encourages self-discipline, improves their imagination, and augments child development. Here are some ideas you can choose from, for starters. Bookworm Bookmark
This is a bookmark made in the shape of a worm or a caterpillar. You will need craft foam in orange, red, green, blue, and yellow colors, foam glue, pipe cleaner (short), medium pompom, two small pompoms, googly eyes, and scissors. Procedure Draw small circles of 1 inch diameter each on the foam. You will need to help your kid with this. Ask them to cut the circles out. You must have ten circles ready. Now, place one circle slightly overlapping the other and glue the overlapping part to join them. Continue doing this, to form a long line of circles. Glue the medium pompom over the first circle. Take the pipe cleaners and cut two pieces of 1 inch each. This will make the antenna. Stick these antennae behind the top circle. Stick one small pompom to the end of each antenna. You can add googly eyes on top of the medium pompom. The bookworm bookmark is ready. Sunflower Hands Craft
For this craft, you'll need yellow construction paper, glue, sunflower seeds, black and brown pipe cleaner, pencil, scissors, and a stapler. Procedure Trace your kid's open hand on a yellow construction paper using a pencil. Trace it 10 times to get ten cutouts. Cut the traced figure properly (you can do this part). You can let your kid cut a few of them. Once you have 10 hand cutouts ready, place them in such a way that the pencil marks are not visible. Arrange them to form a circle, fingers pointing outwards, and each hand slightly overlapping the next. Glue, staple, or tape them together, so that they stay together in a circle to form the shape of a sunflower. Staple the brown pipe cleaner to the backside of the sunflower. This must be long enough to look like a stem. Make a circle with a black pipe cleaner of 1½ inch diameter. Stick this, using glue, in the center of the sunflower. Using glue, stick the seeds in this circle. The paper craft of 'little hands sunflower' is ready. Collage Art
This is a fun craft and your kids will like it the most. Though this is the most messy, it is equally exciting and fun-filled. You will require glue, magazines, newspapers, old comic books, and a big piece of construction paper. Let your kids choose their favorite pictures from the magazines, newspapers, comic books. Procedure: Cut each picture down to size. Use pictures of cars, comic characters, nature, gadgets, etc., anything they like. Before you start making the collage, lay down newspapers on the floor, because the glue might spread, spoiling the surface. Take the construction paper and arrange the pictures randomly over it. Start gluing each picture cut-out and stick it on the construction paper. Once you finish sticking all the pictures, the collage is ready to be placed in your kid's room. Encourage your child to fill up maximum area of the paper. You can try out many variations of these activities using felt or construction paper in different colors. Ask them to draw and cut various shapes on these and stick them on the walls of their room. Crayons, beads, dried flowers, clay, etc. can also be used. You just need to teach them to look around and explore their creativity.
